In THE GRINDER, written first person, we are taken on a surreal but all-too-real trip through a tragic, yet oddly impressive, coming of age tale. The tentacles of youth's indiscretions, when teens and young men are more apt to become enmeshed in the spikes of the American Justice System, are explained and forthright. The "character", or author, isn't at all without youthful impetuosities, yet it seems that while many American kids grow-up receiving some judicial and parental breaks, Karl never got one. He received harsh treatment, ala prison terms or lashings, for the pettiest of acts. Kids will be kids, but when a young boy is told to "assume the position", i.e., bend over, the confusion and shock is all too clear, and the crack of leather across virgin flesh even more terrifying. The charitable organizations' maltreatment of Karl is unforgivable, but he makes his escape, hitch-hiking cross-country as a 15-year old. Not once, but twice, even following a horrifying chase, lashing, and final submission. Having crossed painted deserts and dangerous situations, he finds himself in juvenile hall, and later on the South Korean peninsula, serving in the Army. While there's a glimmer of normality in his future, the anti-authoritarian uniqueness inherent in his makeup does not permit "regular decisions". The latter may be caused by a child-hood disease, after which he had to re-learn physical and mental activities all over again. Indeed, within one year he is in the brig, then in a Kansas military prison. Shortly after release, our character witnesses his father die, and the future begins to spin out of control. Quitting two jobs, selling all the material goods that gave him the opportunity to live a normal life, he flees to California, simply to get away from the memory of a failed CPR attempt, and his Father's death. Sadly, we realize the true trauma was that Karl - for the first time in his life - was finally able to relate to the man who once beat him so badly at times he'd rather run-away than come home. But '67 VW Beetles were not meant to cross Arizona deserts in the Summer, and Karl lands smack dab in the middle of Phoenix. The adventure within the justice system, and subsequently, the prison system, is a whirl-wind ride that begins right from the first word through to his last words. While slanted, this autobiography offers a unique look behind the curtains of who is running our justice system, and prisons, in addition to giving any would-be parent a road map on the trappings of childhood, from whence we all learn.

"The Grinder" è l'autobiografia di Karl. Anche se il libro è stato tradotto in italiano col titolo "Il Tritacarne", è consigliabile per chi sa l'inglese e vuole conoscere meglio Karl procurarsi anche la versione originale di questo libro. "Betrayal of Innocence" (2001)
BETRAYAL OF INNOCENCE is fiction based on fact. The author's experiences within Arizona's maximum facility prisons are given a dose of steroids and delivered with certain convict morality. A morality that has tenets in "The Art of War", or better, "The Prince". If one wishes to survive prison, then both this book and the author's biography are welcome reads. However, in "The Cork", a fictional representation of Arizona's "Central Unit" in Florence, Arizona, there indeed exists a twisted world. Karma is a fact of life in prison, whether you've stored good deeds or not in a previous life. Any action or reaction must be carefully weighed among convicts who've killed over a pack of camel-nons (as in non-filters), or for less. However, this a novel, and the story begins with an innocent Brock MacCool being sentenced to a term of imprisonment in the toughest prison in the State of Arizona. And this world is better lived vicariously through this book, for none would dare venture to commit a crime should they read this well-written account. I daresay account, because of the author's claims within his previous work. Yet, no matter the true bearing of either story, they are presented with entertainment and literary value. However, one gets the feeling of abrasive tension, between GP Convicts and PC Inmates (General Population & Protective Custody). The latter consists mainly of child-molesters and sex-offenders, or worse, while the former consists of "respectable criminals" or proven convicts and gangsters. As Brock fights against a system stacked against his innocence - even as a videotape proves his case later - he must simply survive, and in doing so, the morality of civilian life must be thrown out, or his life extinguished. In a "what comes around goes around" mentality, this book cinches comeuppances with blood, fever, death, and ultimately victory. The appeal of this book is not only its fear invoking realism (i.e. "ARE THERE ACTUALLY PEOPLE WHO THINK THIS WAY IN OUR SOCIETY?"), but also the additional pleasure of not being able to stop wondering how it will end. A welcome read by a new author, despite the shoddy editing by a division of Random House, no less.

Questa volta Xlibris si è limitato a lasciare le iniziali di Karl sulla copertina del libro. "K. L. Guillen" è comunque sempre KARL!
Si tratta di un romanzo ambientato in prigione. Forse il lettore potrebbe sperare che sia tutto inventato, ma purtroppo non è così: anche se il libro non è direttamente autobiografico, il riferimento all'esperienza dell'autore è sempre presente.
Karl stesso dice di questo libro che è MOLTO DURO e avverte che leggerlo può essere anche molto scioccante per chi non abbia conoscenza della realtà delle prigioni americane. Karl ha scritto questo libro perché tutti sappiano quello che succede realmente nelle prigioni americane, visto che ci sono già abbastanza documentari televisivi che falsano la realtà e fanno apparire quello che non è. In prigione c'è violenza, sesso, ingiustizia, gang, omicidi, e molte meschinità non solo da parte dei detenuti ma anche delle guardie.
Chi riuscirà a vincere la "paura" di leggere cose scomode, scoprirà ancora una volta lo stile avvincente di Karl. Anche se la storia finisce bene per il protagonista, Brock McCool, condannato a 15 anni di detenzione per un crimine che non ha commesso (la sua innocenza viene provata), il libro lascia alla fine con l'amaro in bocca perché si vede che l'ingiustizia e la violenza continuano a farla da padrone nel sistema della cosiddetta "giustizia".
Questo libro dovrebbe essere letto da tutti coloro che sostengono i diritti umani e vogliono conoscere la verità su un mondo di violenze e abusi di cui si sa ancora troppo poco.
